A curlew walks the shoreline as a wave bursts behind it in soft pastel light at Avila Beach on a spring morning. I shot this with a long lens from down at sand level, so the wave and sky melt into soft color. Long-billed curlews spend the winter on Central Coast beaches, probing the wet sand with those long curved bills.
