A summer morning at Avila Beach

A great blue heron hunts in the shallows near the rocks below the Avila Beach Pier in soft pink light on a summer morning. The heron stood perfectly still among the rocks while the water flowed past. The pilings of the Avila Beach Pier make a natural frame, and at low tide you can walk right underneath them.

This heron had a favorite breakfast spot by the rocks, but one morning he moved over by the pier, so my wife and I gave him space and headed down the beach. We stopped to pick up a pile of trash that had washed in overnight, and when I turned around, he was right behind me, back in his spot, just as the sky started turning pink.
