It was Thanksgiving morning. Nicolle and I got up well before the sun, carried Harper to the car still asleep, and headed to Avila with a thermos of hot chocolate, our beach chairs, my cameras and a whole homemade pumpkin pie. The plan was simple: watch the sunrise, take a couple of photos and just enjoy the moment together.
Once we were set up on the sand, I headed into the surf to wait for first light. Then it started to rain. It was only a light rain and there was a good gap in the clouds all around, so I stayed hopeful and kept shooting.
Don't forget to look back
I was so focused on the sunrise that I never looked behind me. Then I heard Harper yell, “Look, a rainbow!” I spun around and there it was, an intense double rainbow. I got down low on the sand to catch the first rays of sunlight hitting the beach and the foam of the surf.
The rainbow didn't last long, and neither did the rain. But it was an incredible moment to share with my family.

It's a moment I might have missed if I hadn't brought my daughter. I was focused on one part of the morning. She was enjoying every part of it.
