This is one of those shots I thought about for years before I finally got my chance to take it.
There's a little rock cove in Avila Beach that's underwater most of the year. It only uncovers once in a great while, and only when everything lines up. The creek that feeds into the ocean has to be low, which means summer. The tide has to be extra low. There can't be any marine layer. And all of that has to happen right at dawn.
Over the years I only managed a couple of photos from this spot, and they were all during the day or in the fog.
Then I showed up early one morning and it finally happened.
Sitting in a puddle
I set my tripod as low as it would go and sat right down in a puddle of cold water. Waves were crashing on the rocks behind me and soaking my back, and little crabs were crawling all around me.
I didn't care. I got exactly what I wanted.
