One summer morning, my wife and I got to the beach early to catch the sunrise. I noticed a great blue heron hanging out down by the Avila Pier. I'd seen this same bird on other mornings, always over by the rocks you see in this photo, so it looked like he'd moved his breakfast spot.
We'd planned to shoot under the pier that morning, but we decided to give him some space and headed down the beach instead.
When we got to the rocks, we found a lot of trash and plastic that had washed in with the tide overnight. We cleaned it all up and were about to keep going down the beach when I turned around, and there he was, right behind me, back in his usual spot.
The sky was just starting to turn pink. I took this shot, then headed off to catch the rest of the morning.
Pick it up
Please don't forget: when you see litter on the ground, pick it up, even if it's not yours. Otherwise it could end up in our beautiful ocean. #KeepAvilaClean
